The Independence Thesis
Independence is not net worth. Independence is when your assets generate enough cash flow to cover your life expenses without working. A R10M net worth with R0 cash flow is still dependent. A R1M net worth generating R50K annually in cash flow provides partial independence.
Why Cash Flow Matters
Appreciation is hypothetical. Cash flow is real. An asset appreciating 10% annually is illiquid wealth. An asset generating 10% annual cash flow is spendable wealth. Appreciation creates paper gains. Cash flow creates purchasing power.
The Path to R1M Annual Cash Flow
Target 10% annual yield across your portfolio (20% conservative estimate accounting for various yields). To generate R1M annual cash flow, you need approximately R10M in income-producing assets. Build this systematically: acquire R500K cash flow annually by age 35, R1M by age 40, R2M+ by age 50.
Why This Changes Everything
Once your portfolio generates more than your annual expenses, you are free. Work becomes optional. You control your time. You control your decisions. This is the actual definition of wealth.
Ignore the net worth metrics. Focus on cash flow. When your cash flow exceeds your expenses, you have won the game.
